This is Us is NBC’s new show that’s taken over the lives of the tear-wrenching drama show lovers. AKA this show is the new NBC’s Parenthood. It’s cute, it’s funny, and it’s just so dang loveable.
This is Us is about different people who happen to share the same birthday. The main characters include Jack and Rebecca, a young couple dealing with family life; Randall, a successful father/husband/business man who just found his biological father for the first time; Kevin, an actor who is struggling to go along with what people expect of him; and Kate, a woman who is having a hard time feeling confident in her own skin.
This show delves into the emotional side of situations that happen. The dialogue sounds fairly realistic and flows off of the tongue of the actors, not stiff and unfeeling at all. A simple look or zoom in on an eye roll reads so much more than words can anyway. It’s really similar to how Parenthood felt, if you didn’t catch that already.
Milo Ventimiglia plays an amazing Jack, which really solidifies me even more as a fan of his (I watched Heroes and Gilmore Girls). Mandy Moore has never been a bad actress in my eyes. Sterling K. Brown is phenomenal at working emotion into his words. Justin Hartley shows a lot more depth than in anything I’ve ever seen him in before. And, although I know people will disagree with me on this, Chrissy Metz is an up and coming amazing actress who shines in this show. Basically there are no bad actors here.
The filming is done really flawlessly. It’s done in such a way that you don’t even realize the scene is really changing, it’s more of a flipping the page in a book type of feel. The directors really know what they’re doing, especially in the first episode. The ending of it had me shocked.
NBC has been in desperate need of a family show like this coming back ever since Parenthood ended. It’ll be fun to see where the show takes the audience.
This is Us is on on Tuesdays at 8c. It will be back on air on November 15th.
