Song To Give A Listen: Nathaniel Rateliff And The Night Sweats’s “S.O.B”

I love music.  I’m not a hipster by any means, so my favorites aren’t some out-of-left-field underground tunes that you’ve never heard before.  I love popular stuff, but I don’t love overplayed popular stuff. Like most people, I have a unique mix of favorites.  I don’t stick to one genre only and I never make big proclamations like “Country music is life” or “Bieber sucks.”  I learned a long time ago that music can surprise you.  I enjoy music that is upbeat and sad.  It’s a weirdly awesome feeling when you find a song that’s both.

The first time you hear “S.O.B.,” your initial reaction is to dance, clap, and maybe even stomp your feet.  Nathaniel Rateliff’s voice can’t be compared to anything; a low, loud, soulful, raspy, raw howl, if you will, is what comes out of his mouth.  But in a good way.  The loudest line in the song is “Give me a drink!” so it isn’t hard to see where this could be a party song for some.

After a few listens (and a few articles about Nathaniel Rateliff) the song becomes a little melancholy as you start to understand the lyrics.  It’s about substance abuse and the feelings that come with it.  It’s not made to sound cool, it’s just straightforward.  It’s just so raw and in your face.

I know Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats are certainly not new, but they’re different to what I usually listen to and I enjoy them.  I encourage others to give the song a try and maybe they’ll get a new catchy iTunes purchase out of it.

What song are you obsessing over right now?  Why do you like it?

Have a great day lovelies!
